Professor Yan graduated at Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping in1982 with a bachelor degree of Engineering and earned his Master Degree in1989 and Doctor Degree in 1992 at the Department of Civil Engineering, the Graduate school of Engineering, the University of Tokyo.
He is a specialist in Geographic Information System and Science and contributed to the design and re-construction plan for Sichuan in China after the city was struck by a massive earthquake in 2008.
His research work includes examining the degradation and conversation of the grasslands and making adaptation plans on the Tibetan Plateau and Mongolian Plateau in China.
